Mark Duckham laughs with enjoyment when describing what he loves about his job.
“In my line of work, I have to discover what makes each client ‘tick’ and what their specific and unique needs are, before I can provide them with a helpful and innovative service that will fulfil these needs,” says Mark.
“This process of discovery is challenging and unpredictable, because our industry is full of unique characters from very diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. But this variety and challenge is one of the aspects of my work that I love, because I have to keep on my toes and learn new things about our clients all the time.
“I enjoy listening to clients. I honestly enjoy my time with them enormously.”
Just as with a family, success lies in spending enough time with people and listening to them properly in order to understand them, “despite the fast-paced nature of the world we live in,” Mark says.
“Taking enough time is such a simple principle, but also such a powerful one,” he says. “Things don’t click into place immediately; it takes work. But this is also what makes a successful outcome so satisfying.”
The integrity of the relationship, and the quality of the service the company provides, are what causes a business relationship to endure and grow, he says.
“We use our heads, while trusting our feelings and instincts to guide us. We might not get it right the first time, but then the next time we will do better. If we continually strive for improvement, we’ll definitely get the right results for our clients at the end of the day.”
In business, just as in a family, we underestimate the importance and influence we have to lead others, Mark observes. “In our families, we strive for care, patience and understanding. Our goal is to spend as much time together as possible, and we do our utmost to live in ways that exemplify these ideals for our families.
“If we apply these principles to business too, we’re bound to be successful.”
