Our Chief Operating Officer, Thinus Ferreira, observes that 2017 has been a year of supply chain constraints, due largely to “an unprecedented increase in volumes being shipped from the Asian countries.”
“Presently, the demand is outstripping the supply, which means that trade lines are congested, with dramatic delays for a lot of cargo,” he says. “There has been a substantial increase in the shipping times of our own raw materials. Idle time like this is not ideal, and planning and sustaining our timelines has become a challenge.
“The October storms in Durban contributed to more congestion challenges. Luckily for us, our location means we can use the ports of Ngquru and Cape Town, which has helped us address the problem.”
Change is the fabric of the future, Thinus observes. “Much of how we perceive business is formed by experiences and ideas developed when changes were slow, predictable and incremental,” he says. “The fact is that most industries are being disrupted. The sheer ubiquity of technology, and the speed of the change, are mind-boggling. In business, the conversation is gravitating more to how agile, nimble and adaptable businesses are disrupting established business models.
