Dolphin Bay is happy to see many of our customers setting realistic prices for their treated timber. This gives a glimmer of hope for the sustainability of our sector.
Unfortunately, some companies are still undermining the timber treatment industry by offering recklessly low prices to the market. We’ve noticed that such treaters often fail to deliver on their promised lead times; eventually, their customers allocate a large proportion of their orders to more reliable treaters, who charge higher prices.
This proves that the end user is willing to pay realistic market prices, and that we do well to guard against opportunism, which is especially important in the current economic climate. This publication has published several stories in which economists warn of a looming recession and the financial hardships likely to ensue. Companies should be structured to be resilient, not just efficient, at times such as these.
Resilient businesses can withstand and perhaps even prosper during stormy weather.
Dolphin Bay is doing all in our power to build our own resilience, which is why we automated our manufacturing plants, first in Mossel Bay, then in Sabie. Our working environment is cleaner, better and production is faster. We believe that building a robust company helps to secure our future and that of our customers.
We’re passionate about the timber treatment industry and our customers’ businesses, and don’t want to see any harm come to them.
It might sound as if we’re labouring a point here, but we’ve got good reason for doing so. We’re passionate about the timber treatment industry and our customers’ businesses, and don’t want to see any harm come to them. When companies do badly, they diminish their investment in their own businesses, which lowers the quality bar and makes room for unscrupulous people to enter the industry. The team’s morale, too, takes a sky-dive, bringing great damage to a company’s well-being.
Many of us complain about the burgeoning illegal treatment industry. The reality is that if the formal industry is not profitable, and we do not reinvest in our own businesses, we are becoming more like the illegal treaters ourselves, producing poor-quality products. Dolphin Bay wants to help increase the professionalism and reliability of our industry. The research and development that go into this must not be underestimated.
We are very excited about the research that the South African Wood Preservers Association (SAWPA) is conducting with Stellenbosch University and are advocating for it to continue after the current project is concluded. This will only be possible if our industry is doing well.
Thank you to our customers who are committed to sustainability in our industry. We know it is not easy, but your efforts are valued and, in the long run, will serve you well.
